Why This Checklist Exists

Internet problems tend to feel invisible and mysterious — your video call freezes, your stream buffers, or your connection drops entirely, and there's no obvious reason why. The frustrating reality is that most home connectivity issues are caused by just a handful of common, fixable problems: a modem that needs a restart, a router in a poor location, or more devices competing for bandwidth than your plan can comfortably handle.

This checklist is designed to help you work through those causes methodically, starting with the fastest and most likely fixes first. How to Use This Checklist

Start with the Quick Hardware Checks group and complete every "must" item before moving on. These steps cost nothing and fix a large proportion of reported internet problems before anything more involved is needed.

The Baseline Speed Test group is your diagnostic pivot point. A wired test tells you whether the problem lives in your internet connection itself or in your Wi-Fi network — and that distinction determines which of the remaining groups matters most for your situation.

Wired Test First — Always

Before blaming your ISP or your router settings, run a speed test over a direct Ethernet connection. If wired speeds are normal but Wi-Fi is slow, the problem is your wireless setup — not your internet service. If wired speeds are also poor, the issue is upstream of your router. This single step determines which half of this checklist you actually need.

If you're experiencing slowdowns primarily in the evening, that pattern has a specific cause worth understanding. Peak-hour network congestion is a separate issue from router or modem problems, and the checklist's final group covers what to document before contacting your ISP about it.

It's also worth knowing that not every speed issue is your equipment's fault. Common internet speed myths can lead households to troubleshoot the wrong thing entirely — for example, assuming that paying for faster speeds automatically means every device gets those speeds.

Start Here: Quick Hardware Checks

Check all cable connections between your modem, router, and wall outlet — loose coax or Ethernet cables are a surprisingly common culprit. Must
Restart your modem first by unplugging it, waiting 60 seconds, plugging it back in, and waiting for all lights to stabilize before touching the router. Must

Before You Call Your ISP

Write down your wired speed test results, the times drop-outs occur, and any error messages or unusual modem light patterns you've observed. Must

After the Checklist: When to Call Your ISP

If you've completed all "must" items and your wired speed test still shows results significantly below your subscribed tier, the problem is likely outside your home — on the line between your house and your ISP's network, or at their equipment. At that point, calling support is the right move, but the notes you've gathered while working through this checklist will make that call significantly more productive.

ISP support teams respond better to specific, documented symptoms than to general complaints. Telling a representative that your wired speed averaged 18 Mbps over three tests between 8 and 9 p.m. when you pay for 200 Mbps — and that no outage is showing on their status page — is far more actionable than saying your internet is slow.

If your current setup simply can't meet your household's needs regardless of what you troubleshoot, it may be worth understanding the trade-offs between fixed broadband and mobile hotspot options as you evaluate your next step.

Don't Reset to Factory Defaults Too Soon

A full factory reset on your router wipes all your custom settings, including your Wi-Fi name, password, and any port forwarding rules. This is a last resort, not a first step. Try every item in this checklist before considering it. If you do reset, you'll need your ISP account credentials and original setup information on hand.

Older Modems Can Bottleneck Fast Plans

If your ISP has upgraded your speed tier in recent years but your modem is more than five years old, the hardware itself may be the ceiling on your speeds. Modems must be certified to handle specific speed ranges — a DOCSIS 3.0 modem, for example, cannot deliver the throughput that a DOCSIS 3.1 plan promises. Check with your ISP whether your current modem is compatible with your plan.
