How a VPN Actually Works
A VPN does two core things: it encrypts your internet traffic and routes it through a server operated by the VPN provider before it reaches the wider internet. Think of it as a secure tunnel. Anyone watching the traffic between your device and that tunnel entrance — your internet service provider (ISP), a coffee shop router, or a network eavesdropper — sees only scrambled, unreadable data.
At the other end, websites and services see the VPN server's IP address instead of your own. That's why VPNs are commonly used to appear as if you're browsing from a different city or country.
That's essentially the whole mechanism. The encryption method most reputable VPN services use (typically AES-256 combined with protocols like WireGuard or OpenVPN) is strong by current standards. What changes is who can see your traffic, not whether your traffic can be tracked at all.

Myth
A VPN makes me completely anonymous online.
Fact
A VPN masks your IP address but does not prevent websites, advertisers, or platforms from identifying you through cookies, browser fingerprinting, or account logins.
Anonymity online requires far more than hiding your IP. When you're logged into Google, Facebook, or any other account, those platforms know exactly who you are — your VPN changes nothing about that. Browser fingerprinting can also identify your device based on its configuration, installed fonts, screen resolution, and dozens of other signals, regardless of which IP address you appear to be using. A VPN is a privacy tool, not an anonymity tool.
Myth
A VPN protects me from viruses, malware, and hackers.
Fact
VPNs encrypt data in transit but have no ability to detect, block, or remove malicious software on your device.
If you download a malicious file or click a phishing link, your VPN is irrelevant to that threat. Malware operates at the software level on your device — not at the network traffic level where a VPN operates. For malware protection, you need up-to-date operating system patches and reputable security software. Some VPN providers bundle basic threat-blocking features, but these are separate add-ons, not core VPN functionality, and their effectiveness varies.

A VPN only protects traffic on the specific device it is installed and active on, unless it's configured at the router level.
If you run a VPN app on your laptop, your smartphone and smart TV remain outside the VPN tunnel. Router-level VPN configuration routes all household traffic through the VPN, but this requires a compatible router and more technical setup. It also means every device's traffic is routed through the VPN simultaneously, which can affect speed for devices that don't need the protection. Where VPNs Genuinely Help
Despite the caveats, VPNs serve real, practical purposes. Public Wi-Fi networks — in airports, hotels, and cafes — are the clearest use case.
