Advantages of rubber mulch
Rubber mulch is used to prevent the growth of weeds as it does not absorb water. An alternative to natural fibers or wood chips, rubber mulch, when layered adequately, especially around the edges, helps in controlling weeds as it does not allow their seeds to germinate in it.
Rubber mulch is cost effective as it does not require continuous replacement. When used correctly, it can last for a minimum of 10 years without any pressing damage.
Additionally, rubber mulch is more durable and usually lasts longer than organic mulch options available in the market. However, rubber mulch does not add beneficial nutrients to the soil.
Another advantage of using rubber mulch is that it does not attract bugs and other insects. Unlike wood mulches, it is impervious to pest attacks as ants or termites cannot feed on it.
Rubber mulch is an excellent alternative as it helps the soil retain its moisture. It also prevents the ground from overheating, thus blocking evaporation. Moisture from rain can make its way into the soil and roots quite easily as rubber is partially porous. It is incapable of holding any moisture on its own, and it does not absorb any moisture from the soil either.
Rubber mulch is relatively inexpensive as it does not decompose and is easy to install.
Another advantage of rubber mulch is that buyers can choose from several color options to create exclusive patterns that suit the area and its theme. Moreover, since rubber is flexible, it is easy to mold it into different shapes and contours around the play area.
Shredded rubber mulch is known to provide a much softer, spongy surface which is quite useful in the event of a fall, and it also absorbs shock. Also, rubber mulch, unlike pea gravel, doesn’t compress even after continuous usage. It does not freeze in winters and nor does it burn on hot days. Thus, rubber mulch provides year-round protection and comfort on playgrounds.
